Linux Installation

The download and installation process for Redhat Linux has come a long way. It used to be that the process to install and configure your linux box the way you wanted it would take you a couple of days. With the Redhat installer, in combination with the redhat network, it is now possible to install Linux on your machine and have it configured and set up within a day. The Redhat network provides for a way of automatically updating your box and keeping it current.

The following instructions will focus on installing and configuring linux for a home web server. The installation is based on installing the personal edition of redhat linux 7.3 (valhalla), compiling the kernel, and configuring it for Apache and Jakarta-Tomcat.

  1. Download the ISO's. This can be done directly from the redhat network, or better yet, from any of the possible mirrors out there. The redhat site seems to get bogged down with traffic and any new release will take about 20 times longer than you would expect. I will be putting up a mirror here for anyone who requests a download of the more recent ISO's.
  2. Burn the ISO's to CD. Redhat 7.3 has expanded to 3 disks, burn them and keep them handy.
  3. Get your box ready. Make sure you have a drive big enough to fit the install and have decided how you are going to mount your partitions.
  4. Install Redhat.
  5. Once the installation is complete, you can get to the redhat network to see what patches/updates are available for download.
